Banana Tree: Surprisingly Authentic For A Chain | Londonist
food
We'd heard mixed reviews of Indo-Chinese restaurant chain Banana Tree, so we were curious to see what kind of experience we would have.
The new starter special of crunchy panko coated calamari served with a sweet and salty tamarind sauce is absolutely delicious, albeit toeing the line of being overdone.
The regular menu starters of soft dumpling with a strong lemongrass sauce and satay skewers beautifully charcoaled with an authentic tasting satay sauce pretty much filled us up before our mains were served.
We combo'd up a beef rendang curry, which had just the right amount of heat that built slowly as we ate, and tamarind crispy fish which paired perfectly with the lemongrass cooler mocktail — even if one of the three fish fillets was basically just batter.
The house salad and sweet corn cakes were neither here nor there, but we were pleasantly surprised by our overall experience and how many of our choices tasted like we were back on holiday in Thailand.
Banana Tree Wardour Street review – lots of plates all in one place ...
food menu staff value desserts
I was accompanied on my first visit to Banana Tree by The Euro Hedgie who immediately had doubts about the large, unfocussed menu but I was willing to give the place a chance.
Nevertheless if you want to get as much value as possible, there’s the combo deal which allows you pair a curry, stew or ‘regional speciality’ main course with a sesame glass noodle salad, sweet corn cakes, crackers and steamed jasmine rice for just £3.25 extra.
It would be an understatement to say that my first visit to Banana Tree was very disappointing, but I took the opportunity to try the place again, this time with the help of Wicket and Snoop Dogg.
The glass noodle salad and the crackers were still nothing to write home about, but the sweet corn cakes actually tasted of corn this time around with a moist, coarse texture rather than the dry supermarket onion bhaji-effect that offended the Hedgie.
Although my fellow bloggers seem fond of the place, my conclusion after having eaten my way through a fair chunk of the menu at Banana Tree is that the food is, at best, merely OK.
Banana Tree Restaurant Review - Chelmsford's latest restaurant ...
food menu
For starters we had the Fresh Indo Duck Wraps (£6.95), served with Batavia lettuce, Viet pickle, fresh herbs and Nuoc Cham dipping sauce.
Although you can eat the spring rolls straight, the dish came with instructions how to eat this Vietnamese dish.
I.e. you need to place the herbs and pickle in a lettuce leaf, then the spring roll and sauce before wrapping the concoction.
Vegetarians will fall in love with the Aubergine with Caramel Sauce (£5.95) at the first bite but the best of the bunch was the Mekong Crispy Prawns (£6.95) which came with a sweet chilli dip.
What I liked was that all dishes came with plenty of fresh salads abundantly dressed with various sauces.

food
‘Indochinese’ street food is the backbone of the extremely varied menu, though Thai and Thai-influenced dishes dominate.
A beef, chilli, ginger and basil stir-fry needed a punch of the advertised chilli, and any basil flavour was almost imperceptible.
Chicken laksa had decent depth of flavour, yet was a little watery.
With a busy restaurant and one large group to accommodate, staff seemed to be under the cosh – our mains were slow to appear, and one dish arrived tepid – but normal service had resumed with our Vietnamese iced coffee.
